Reno OKs Sky Bridges for J Resort, With No Promise What's on the Other End

Reno just approved two enclosed skyways over downtown streets for J Resort, one toward a possible future pool and spa, one toward a possible parking garage. Neither destination is actually built or promised yet. Here's what's really going on with the biggest land assembly downtown Reno has seen in decades.

Carson City's BOOnanza Turns 10 Tonight

Carson City's biggest trick-or-treat night is tonight, 4 to 7 at Mills Park, free, tenth year running, more than 100 local businesses handing out candy. New this year: a skate night. Missing this year: the fifty-year-old mini-train, which is broken.

Washoe County's 911 System Runs on Three Separate Dispatch Centers

There's no single "911" in Washoe County. Reno, Sparks, and the county each run their own dispatch center, fire agencies each have their own separate arrangements, and one nearby fire district's calls are literally dispatched out of California. A fix has been underway for years, and it's still not done.

The Railroad Comstock Silver Built, and Nevada Rebuilt

In 1868, four Bank of California men built a 21-mile railroad to haul Comstock silver ore, so crooked it drops 1,600 feet through curves equal to seventeen full circles. It made a fortune, then died slowly with the mines. In 2009, Nevada spent decades and public money bringing part of it back to life.
